Twitter was a buzz last night with word that Martha Stewart is in Brussels. Yes the domestic goddess herself is in town! For those of you who don’t know Martha, she is the undisputed queen of food, entertaining, decorating and everything related to household perfection (and for a brief stint behind bars for dodging financial dealings, but we won’t go there). Yesterday afternoon Martha tweeted this picture of an uninspired cup of coffee from La Quincaillerie.
Now I can’t be sure that she ate there or just had coffee, but in any case, this would not be one of my best picks. I love you Martha, but come on, you can do better than this while in Brussels! Here are a few tips on better options next time you’re in town.
If you ever find yourself on Rue du Page again, one of my favorites is Gusto. This is a great Italian restaurant on the corner with Rue Fourmois. One of our regulars, I always enjoy the food here – bold flavors in generous servings. I strongly recommend making a reservation as this place fills up quickly any night of the week. The prices have gone up since I first discovered it but still a good choice.
If it’s seafood you’re after, head downtown to Mer du Nord on Place Sainte Catherine. Actually a fishmongers, this place also has a snack bar serving classic Belgian seafood dishes like fish soup and croquettes de scampis. It’s best to go when the weather is good, as there is limited space under the bar’s awning. My favorite is to enjoy a couple of different plates with friends and a glass of white wine on the square across the street.
And if it was simply coffee you wanted, I think Natural Café (several locations) serves up the best in Brussels. If you’re looking for somewhere to linger, Café de la Presse is the popular choice for the moment.
And Martha, don’t hesitate to get in touch next time you’re passing through. I know a few other good spots as well 🙂
