Foodie Fridays – Antichi Sapori Italiani

When I’m in the mood for a cozy dinner at home without having to cook myself, Antichi Sapori Italiani is one of my go-to places. Opened over 30 years ago, it’s a well-stocked Italian deli located on Rue Bailli and always has a great selection of pre-made dishes and other Italian treats.

Before you even enter the shop you can get a glimpse of some of the lasagnas and pastas through the window. Once inside, take your time to explore the counter that runs the length of the store. There are several types of lasagna, ravioli, vegetable dishes, as well as meat main dishes like saltimbocca and ossobuco. Further along you’ll discover several antipasti choices including fish, vegetables and olives. There’s also a huge selection of Italian meats (jambon de parme, bresaola, etc) and cheeses (gorgonzola, asiago, provolone, etc).

With the rain and cold temperatures yesterday I decided to try the veau alla parmigiana (veal parmesan) and ravioli aux cepes (ravioli with mushrooms). Both were delicious. The prices are a little on the high side (€35 for dinner for two) but the service is friendly and the portions are very generous – one serving of the veal was enough for two and we also had leftovers of the ravioli. I didn’t go for any cold items this time, but I have in the past and can recommend them, especially the cheeses.

If you have time, don’t forget to check out the other wall of the shop, which stocks from floor to ceiling all sorts of Italian products from dried pastas to wine to cakes and cookies. Right now they have a few panettone in different flavors left over from Easter. Alternatively, you can stop next door at the beautiful Debailleul patisserie for a dessert to take home.

So next time you’re out shopping on Rue Bailli and (conveniently) run out of time to make dinner, check out Antichi Sapori Italiani for a ‘home-cooked’ meal without the fuss.

I asked two escalopes Milanese, the “nice” gentleman filled the dish of sauce while I was not looking … for 2 people, I went out with a dish of 950 gr for € 28 … If you want to ruin this is the place!
