Brussels Design Market

Brussels just can’t seem to get enough of all things vintage! And Sundays seem to be the days to enjoy finding the best of second-hand. After last week’s vintage fairs, this weekend brings us the 13th edition of the Brussels Design Market.

Brussels has regular flea markets, but nothing like this. The event is devoted entirely to design with an emphasis on items dating from the 50s to the early 80s. Taking place on 21 and 22 April at Tour & Taxis (86c Avenue du Port), this is one of the largest 20th century design markets with vendors from across Europe.

The Brussels Design Market is not only for dealers and collectors, but also the public. There will be both rare items and more affordable ones on offer, including furniture and decorative pieces from Eames, Panton, Knoll, Bertoia and other European and American furniture designers. I’m sure there will be some whacking stuff for sale, but who doesn’t need a bright orange plastic chair? Ok, maybe not everyone but it’s fun to look anyway. You can always buy a something small like a clock or ash tray.

The Market will host a ‘preview day’ on Saturday from 2 to 6pm to give dealers and buyers first dibs on the best items (admission is €20). On Sunday the event is open to everyone (no entrance fee) from 8am to 4pm. There will be food and drinks on offer both days, as well as a display of vintage cars for sale by

I love rummaging around flea markets and shops like Troc for second-hand furniture, so I’m bummed I’ll be out of town this weekend and miss the market. At least it will keep me from buying yet another lamp and the husband from being tempted by a vintage Eames chair. 🙂
