Last weekend while wandering around the Sablon I popped into the TASCHEN Brussels store for a quick look. Brussels is one of only a handful of cities lucky enough to have a bookshop from TASCHEN, the publishing house that produces amazing books on art, architecture, fashion, photography and pop culture. The store opened a few years ago but it’s always a pleasure to visit and browse the latest titles.
The shop is located at the bottom of Grand Sablon amongst the many chocolate shops and often has an eye-catching display in the front window. The interior was done by Philippe Starck, the famous French designer, and boasts vaulted ceilings, shiny gold columns and beautiful displays of all the TASCHEN books.
Many in the collection are enormous but are artfully placed around the store so customers can sneak a peek of the gorgeous contents. One of the most impressive was a leather-bound, limited edition book of the complete works of artist Marc Newson for a cool €5000! They also copies of The James Bond Archives, Golden Edition signed by Daniel Craig (€1000) to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Bond.
I did find quite a few books (at more reasonable prices) that I would love to have on my coffee table at home, including Advertising from the Mad Men Era, a photography book of Audrey Hepburn and the TASCHEN city guides (we need one for Brussels!). Another one that caught my attention was The New York Times: 36 Hours. 150 Weekends in the USA & Canada, which I spotted on friend and follow blogger JessinBelgium’s coffee table book selection. It made me want to go a road trip next time I’m in the US!
If you have time tomorrow after work, stop by the store for a special event. TASCHEN is launching a monograph about the Austrian artist Gustav Klimt on the occasion of his 150th anniversary. With over 600 pages and weighing 6 kilos, the book Gustav Klimt: The Complete Paintings provides a complete overview of Klimt’s paintings with expert analysis and archival material. The author and Director of the Leopold Museum in Vienna, Tobias Natter, will be at the TASCHEN Brussels store from 5-7pm to present the new book. You can reserve a spot by phone or email firstname.lastname@example.org.
Also be sure to check out the TASCHEN Brussels Facebook page for all the upcoming events and book releases.
